Dr Henrik Wangel, Anaesthetist at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton

Dr Henrik Wangel is a specialist anaesthetist who provides anaesthesia for Dr Hirpara's upper limb operating lists at CQ Hand + Upper Limb. A Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA), he has practised as a consultant anaesthetist in Central Queensland since 2004.

He trained in South Australia and England, completing the Diploma of Anaesthetics (UK) during eighteen months as an anaesthetic SHO in Crewe, and spent his provisional fellowship year between Flinders Medical Centre and Toronto General Hospital in Canada, working in complex cardiothoracic anaesthesia and echocardiography. His earlier training included four months of intensive care at the Royal Adelaide Hospital with fixed- and rotary-wing aeromedical retrieval, and he has since completed the CareFlight retrieval course — including helicopter underwater escape training — and FAST ultrasound training.

His lists in Mackay and Rockhampton span bariatric, plastic, orthopaedic and maxillofacial surgery alongside a substantial obstetric and paediatric workload, and he provides paediatric anaesthesia at North Lakes Hospital. That breadth across cardiac, paediatric and retrieval anaesthesia means he is well placed to care for patients with medical complexity coming to upper limb surgery. Dr Wangel has provided anaesthesia for Dr Hirpara's lists at the Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton since October 2022.

Away from the hospital he fishes, dives and flies light aircraft — and, given the chance, swims through the ice in Finland after a decent sauna.
