Research record

Peer-reviewed
publications

Over thirty peer-reviewed papers and a Springer textbook chapter, spanning flexor-tendon biomechanics from the MD years, arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction from the fellowship with Associate Professor Cutbush, and a wider strand of orthopaedic trauma and infection research from training in Ireland.

The earliest work was a doctoral programme at the University of Galway under Mr Michael O'Sullivan, designing and ex-vivo testing a novel barbed device for zone-II flexor tendon repair — published in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery. The shoulder and acromioclavicular technique papers belong to the inaugural Cutbush fellowship in Brisbane in 2014–15. A reviewer appointment with Frontiers in Orthopaedic Surgery (Frontiers Media / Nature) has continued since 2014.

Each paper carries small PubMed and DOI pills where the identifier exists, so the reference can be opened on either the NLM or publisher record. The full record — citation counts, h-index, author network — is verifiable on the external profiles linked at the bottom of the page.

Open-source software

Reverse-engineering & codec development

Beyond clinical research, a strand of low-level software engineering — reverse-engineering a proprietary dictation codec that had no open-source decoder for nine years, then publishing the specification and a from-scratch implementation.

  1. Rust / Python · MIT licence · 2026-02

    dss-codec

Open-source decoder for Olympus DSS and DS2 dictation audio — the first public DS2 implementation, closing a nine-year gap (FFmpeg ticket #6091, October 2017). Author GitHub

Reverse-engineered from Olympus's DssDecoder.dll via Ghidra decompilation. Includes complete bitstream specification, AES decryption for password-protected files, and byte-for-byte verification against the official DirectShow filter. Adopted by DS2-Anywhere for production transcription pipelines (3,200+ dictation files validated).
