Each scale runs from 1 (no symptoms, no difficulty) to 5 (very severe symptoms, unable to do), and the band simply reads your average answer back against the scale's own steps. The two scales are reported separately — there is no combined total, and no single cut-off that means treatment is needed; the score is a snapshot of how your hand is behaving this fortnight. One published reference point: on the symptom scale, most patients at or below about 1.8 consider their symptom state acceptable. A change of about 1 point on a scale is generally considered a noticeable difference, which is why repeating the score over time — before and after night splints, a steroid injection or carpal tunnel release — is more informative than a single number.
