Travelling for surgery

Where to stay in Rockhampton

Many patients travel into Rockhampton for surgery — from the Capricorn Coast, Gladstone, Emerald, Mackay, Longreach and across the central west. This page covers the most practical accommodation options for an overnight or short stay around an admission at Mater Private Hospital.

On-site, adjacent to the hospital

Mater House

Mater House sits adjacent to Mater Private Hospital and is run by the hospital itself. It is the simplest option for patients or family members travelling from out of town for a procedure — no taxi, no drive on the morning of admission, and walking distance to the ward and to the practice rooms on Level 1 of the main building.

Availability and bookings go through the Mater Private Rockhampton admissions team — they can confirm whether Mater House is appropriate for the timing of your admission.

Mater House is operated by Mater Private Hospital, not by CQ Hand + Upper Limb. Booking, payment and any cancellation arrangements are handled directly by the hospital.

If Mater House is unavailable

Hotels and motels in Rockhampton

Rockhampton has a range of hotels, motels and serviced apartments within a short drive of Mater Private — most between five and fifteen minutes by car. Specific recommendations vary with availability, so the practice does not maintain a fixed list. The practice office can suggest options that previous patients have used, or the Mater Admissions team can help if a hospital-coordinated booking is easier given the timing of your surgery.

For patients travelling with a partner or family member for a longer stay, a serviced apartment is usually the most practical option — kitchen facilities and laundry on site, and most are five to ten minutes from the hospital.

Planning ahead

What to arrange in advance

  • Confirm your surgery date and admission time with the practice before booking accommodation. Operating theatre lists occasionally shift.
  • Discuss expected length of stay with Dr Hirpara at your pre-operative review. Same-day discharge is common for hand and wrist day-surgery work; an inpatient stay of one to three nights is typical for shoulder arthroplasty.
  • Plan transport home. Patients are not permitted to drive themselves home after a general anaesthetic. If you are travelling alone, the Mater Admissions team can advise on options.
  • Bring your referral and current imaging with you — the FAQ page and the visit page cover what to bring to your consult and to surgery.
