Why patients travel

From Yeppoon to the rooms

Capricorn Coast residents make up a steady portion of the practice's referrals — for shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand conditions that need specialist input not available on the coast. The drive is straightforward, and where appointment timing matters the practice will work with the patient to fit the consult around school runs, work shifts or other appointments in town.

Patients from Yeppoon are commonly seen for rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement, carpal tunnel surgery, trigger finger release, Dupuytren's surgery, thumb joint replacement and the full range of shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand surgery. Fee structure, Medicare rebates and the surgery-quote process are on the fees page.

Imaging, therapy & scheduling

Designed around the distance

  • Imaging Imaging completed on the Capricorn Coast (I-MED Yeppoon and similar providers) can be viewed electronically by Dr Hirpara before the consult, so patients don't need to carry films across.
  • Post-operative therapy There's no hand therapy on the Capricorn Coast, so post-operative hand therapy is done at the Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton through Extend Rehabilitation. Local physiotherapy on the coast is used where a patient already has a relationship with a clinic.
  • Scheduling Where possible the practice combines pre-operative consultation, theatre planning and the first post-operative review into the smallest number of trips across the range — particularly for patients with limited transport.
Common questions

From Yeppoon — answered

Is consultation and surgery done in the same building in Rockhampton?
Yes. The rooms at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton are in the same building as the operating theatres, so on the day of surgery there is no separate hospital admission trip — pre-admission paperwork can be coordinated on the same visit. For Capricorn Coast patients this means one drive across the Yeppoon Road for consultation and a second on the day of theatre, with no extra trips in between.
Can I have post-operative reviews by telehealth from the Capricorn Coast?
Where the rehabilitation protocol allows, yes — typically after the first in-person post-operative review. Some operations need an in-person review with wound or sutures inspection at the early stage; once that is done, subsequent reviews can often be coordinated by telehealth, with active rehabilitation run by a Capricorn Coast physiotherapist. Dr Hirpara writes to the local physiotherapist with the post-operative protocol so rehabilitation continues without interruption.
